Cuts OK But...
Posted by: Michael L. from SIOUX CITY, IA on 06/22/2016

This pruner cuts OK but has a few flaws. The slide lock seems to move to the lock position frequently and has to opened for the next cut. The lock is loose, sloppy fit. If your hand rides forward on the handles you can get pinched with a painful blood blister as the result. I would not recommend this pruner.

When I got it I didn't think it was going to be as good as my old non-ratchet pruners, but I was wrong. I used them to cut thick roots and branches. These grip onto branches, if they don't cut through the first time, just squeeze the handle again, and it carries on cutting from where it left off on the ratchet and it cuts through effortlessly Love it, better than my old onenes.

Ratcheted hand pruner ,,,,, not what we hoped for
Posted by: Leroy L. from Milaca, MN on 07/11/2015
Rating:
The pruner works okay for larger stems but using it for every day pruning is not so good. The ratchet function makes it difficult to use for simple jobs.
Response from Generac SupportThank you for providing feedback on your Ratchet Hand Pruner purchase. The hand pruner you chose does have by-pass style blades. Blade and bill slide past each other like scissors and are best used for close, clean cuts on live branches. The cutting action you’ll take when using this style pruner is also scissor like in motion. Short quick cuts; try and avoid the one longer squeeze that will likely result in something more like a tear and in some instances; the blades will get stuck. It is suggested that you use bypass pruners for up to three quarters of an inch-thick branches and loppers for one inch and slightly larger. Bypass pruners offer a cleaner cut as the blade passes all the way through the stem. Try using that scissor action as we mentioned; we really believe that you’ll be pleased with the performance of the Ratchet Hand Pruner once you get the feel for how the cutting action works. Thank you for your business and for choosing DR® Power. Happy Gardening!

Disappointed at best!
Posted by: Kerry M. from OTIS ORCHARDS, WA on 06/17/2015
Rating:
Ordinarily I am not a complainer. In fact, this is the first review I've ever made that rates less that a 4. I purchased the Ratchet Hand Pruner with a larger order as a gift to my wife. Her pruner was getting harder for her to use. When it arrived, I took it out to do test-trim; I made exactly four cuts and the pruner failed. It twisted and fouled the cutting blade (nicked the blade against the stationary bypass blade). It could not thereafter be used, and, although I could have taken the shears apart and attempted sharpening it, I elected to call DR, express my disappointment and send it back. The DR rep was very polite and immediately refunded my money. She said it wasn't cost effective to send it back, so I have disposed of it. Note that this experience will not deter me from purchasing from DR. I believe your products are great and cannot wait for the rest of my order to arrive. Thank you for handling of this matter.
Response from Generac SupportThank you for your feedback. We work hard to source and in turn offer products that are going to be very useful and at the same time are of good quality and value. We apologize that the Ratchet Hand Pruner that you received did not prove to be as durable as we would expect it to be and have found over the years that it has been well received by our customers. That said we are pleased that our Customer Service Department took care of this issue for you. We certainly appreciate that you chose DR® Power and hope we hear from you again!

I've used the hand pruner several times now, and have made adjustments in order to use it. The first use the blade had a nick on it and I had to file it in order for the pruner to close. The blade and lower arm easily miss align with one another, making cutting harder than it should be to cut.

These are by-pass pruners and not like the racket ones i have. Mine have a slot where the blade fits into to cut the limb. These are not as good as they tend to stick and do not return to open position, this is even before i used them. They will be worse once they get gummed up. Not very happy with the purchase.

I like the small size to fit my hand. Question: Should there be a more rapid release as the ratchet portion of the hand pruner seems a bit show and also to open? Wonder if I should return for your review? Waiting for your response..............
Response from Generac SupportThanks for your review. We’re glad that you like the Pruners! The opening speed should be the same as most other pruners. Without seeing it in action it’s hard to say what your situation is. Perhaps some lubrication or using it a little bit will increase the speed? We will be contacting you to see how best to solve your issue.

So far, this pruner has been unable to cut stems, twigs, vines, paper, plastic--um, well, anything at all. It grabs and twists and eventually rips apart by brute force the item to be cut, but CUT something? In your dreams.

We will contact you about this and get you a working solution.

Best cutters ever

This is my second pair. Now - why are they so good if I had to replace my first pair? We reclaimed about 2 acres of old family land that is in the middle of the woods and was completely overgrown by 'green-briar' (aka Cat's Claw), grapevine, Carolina jasmine, Virginia creeper, and possibly some other vines I can't name. We used a DR Field & Brush to clear undergrowth. It could cut the vines off at the base, but they still hung from the trees so thick one could hardly see through in places. Also, often the vines would tangle the DR machine by stretching across its handlebars, levers, etc. So in the process I bought a pair a pair of these that I wore on my hip. Whenever I would get caught up, I took these out & clipped my way free. Later, I would go back and clip up as high as I could reach so as not to hit the briars again later. I can't tell you how many thousands of vines these things clipped. From small 1/8" or so to larger 3/4" to 1" or so. Easily 10,000 - probably lots more. The ratcheting thing is the trick! It allowed me to clip much larger & tougher vines than I could have with straight leveraged clippers. They are also very nice for more delicate operations such as trimming roses, cutting flowers, and shaping bushes. So there is the crux of my satisfaction: Delicate and Tough - all in one! After 7 years of such use, they finally got where they would not automatically re-open; the blades would stick. I tried cleaning, sharpening, oiling, adjusting the screw. I guess they simply wore out. As our 2 acres are now clear; I can't foresee putting the same amount of abuse on this new pair. I suspect with more 'normal' use, they will last me 20 years or so.

Just got these today and thought they weren't going to be anything special until I made some grapevine cuttings. I have some long handle racheting pruners that I use for limbing trees. These little ratcheting pruners give that same added cutting strength with the accuracy of a palm size tool. They give a very clean, quick cut, and are perfect for making cuttings to root in the nursery.
